Mumbai’s daily coronavirus case figure has dropped below the 1,000-mark after over 10 weeks. The Maharashtra capital, which had been ravaged by the dangerous second wave of Covid infections in April, on Tuesday logged just 953 cases, lowest since March 2. However, testing has sharply declined compared to the April levels.

The city on Tuesday reported 44 deaths in a day. The positivity rate in Mumbai was 5.31 per cent – way lower than the April figures. Its recovery rate has also improved to 93 per cent; the doubling rate rests at 255 days.

Mumbai had reported 849 cases on March 2. The next few weeks, however, were extremely challenging as it was hit by an unprecedented surge, which took the city’s health infrastructure to the verge of collapse.

The Maharashtra capital had been conducting nearly 50,000 tests every day last month. The test numbers have plummeted in May. The city administration now conducts around 20,000-25,000 tests per day. On Sunday, testing dropped even further at 17,640.

Maharashtra, which consistently reported over 60,000 cases last month, logged 28,438 Covid cases on Tuesday. The daily death count, however, remained worryingly high at 679.

The worst-hit state in the country registered an overall positivity rate of 17.2 per cent on Tuesday. 52,898 patients were discharged during the period. The recovery rate now stands at 90.69 per cent.

Pune remains the worst-hit city in the state with 3,795 cases and 24 deaths in a day, followed by Nashik with 2,246 cases and 37 deaths.

Maharashtra has imposed lockdown-like restrictions to stem the growth of the virus in the state.

India on Tuesday recorded its highest ever one-death spike in death count, registering 4,329 fatalities in 24 hours. The number of cases, however, dropped to 2.63 lakh.
